One Loaf and a Few Fish Can Feed a Crowd

We had good intentions of getting out and fishing on Friday morning, but when we saw the whitecaps on the lake, we decided it was too rough. The forecast showed the winds would die down later in the afternoon, so we set our sights on a late-afternoon fishing expedition.

I spent the morning working on our laundry and adding photos to my blog post. Tom went for a bike ride on the Migizi trail and across the road at Norway Beach. Jared went for a run at the local high school track. Chloe and Mary drove to Grand Rapids (MN) to meet their friend Kate, who lives in Hibbing, at the Brewed Awakenings coffee shop. Leah and Phyllis enjoyed their pastimes–diamond art, reading and TikTok for Leah; spinning, knitting, and watching the Tour de France for Phyllis.

Around 3:30, when the winds had sufficiently died down, we made our way out to Star Island with Jared and Leah. It didn’t take long for us to call it quits on that area and move over to the Potato Islands instead.

Tonight was “Fish Fry” night, when cousin Paul and Melissa crank up the heat on their fish deep fryer and graciously share it with our family as well. We usually include the “T” family with us, which meant we had 13 people to feed, and by early Friday we only had 20 fish (40 filets), to share. We were concerned that our shortage of fish would require supplementing with chicken nuggets or some other fry-able food.

We were thankful we managed to pull in six more fish (our first two rock bass for this year, and four small perch). and just like Jesus feeding the 5,000, we ended up with plenty of food for all. We didn’t have 12 baskets left over, but our 1 loaf (of garlic bread), and 26 fish–plus homemade onion rings, fruit salad, and lettuce salad–provided plenty of food for our gang of 13. Everyone went away satisfied after a mouth-watering meal of very fresh, fried fish.

After dinner, we rounded up all the kids just a little before dark, for the annual “cousin jump shot.”
